How To Ski As An Adult: Our Five Top Tips

It’s no secret that skiing is a whole lot of fun – but if you didn’t get the chance to learn how to ski at an early age, it can feel like you’ve missed out on your chance to enjoy the slopes.

But the good news is, that’s not the case and with the right guidance, you could be taking to the pistes with confidence before you know it!

Sound good? Read on for our need-to-know tips on learning to ski as an adult.

  1. Positivity is key

A huge part of learning to ski at any age is having the right mental attitude and mindset. Whilst it’s totally normal to feel on the back foot if you’re the only one in your group of friends who doesn’t know how to ski, you shouldn’t let this get in the way of having a positive experience.

Remember to stay open minded when you take to the slopes for the first time, and focus on having fun, rather than trying to become an immediate expert.

  1. Don’t expect too much of yourself

The first time you go skiing, it can feel pretty intimidating if you’re surrounded by seasoned skiers. It’s important to remember that learning any new skill takes time, so don’t go into it expecting to become a pro after one day. This will only set you up for disappointment.

The best thing about learning to ski as an adult is doing it at your own pace, so take a deep breath and enjoy the whole experience – falls and all!

  1. Get physically prepared

Although you don’t have to be the picture of health to be able to ski – it’s always a good idea to be prepared and in decent shape.

Being out on the slopes can quickly drain your energy, so even if you’re just building up a bit of stamina ahead of your first skiing holiday – you’d be surprised at the difference it can make.

If you’re unsure where to start – there are plenty of at home ski workout routines you can find online for free!

  1. Make sure you have all the gear!

We’ve all heard of ‘all the gear – no idea’, but in this instance having the right kit before you attempt a ski getaway has never been so important. Of course, we’re not suggesting you rush out and buy every bit of skiing equipment on the market. Instead, you should aim to build your collection up, making sure you research brands first, and keep to the essentials to avoid overspending on gimmicky items.

If it’s your first time, it could be a good idea to hire out some kit from the resort. That way you’ll have a better idea for next time whether you need to shell out money for your own or not.

  1. Choose the right ski resort

Not every ski resort is built for beginners – so it’s vital that you pick somewhere that can accommodate you and your brand-new hobby. The last thing you want is to spend huge amounts on a ski getaway, only to find out that there are no suitable pistes for you to practice on.

Here at El Lodge, we encourage beginners old and new to our boutique resort. We offer 106km of ski area, with 124 pistes, 9 of which perfect for brand-new skiers.

So, whatever your ski level – we can accommodate.

Remember – you’re not alone!

Adult beginner ski lessons make up over a third of all ski lessons – so don’t think that you’re the odd one out if you’re taking to the slopes later on in life for the first time.

Learning how to ski is an exciting and challenging new hobby, and here at El Lodge, we have done all we can to make even the most unexperienced skiers feel at home. So, if you’re thinking of learning, get in touch with our team to discuss our package options – including our ski guide and school.
